If you are into the Great Gatsby kind of parties (you’re not alone), The Powder Room on Cecil Street is the only bar in Singapore you need to be when it’s time for bubbles
The Roaring Twenties are back – at least, they are, nestled somewhere in a restored Art Deco building in the CBD. And within this intimate space, fittingly called The Powder Room, all that glitters is, literally, gold, with slick leather seats and polished marbled surfaces and a jazzy soundtrack to transport you back to the hedonistic days of the 1920s.
Sure, interiors are on point and sexy as hell, but The Powder Room goes beyond appearances in its revival of the Prohibition Era. Here, the parties are like those back in the day – thanks to a certain dress code (for the wait staff), a sophisticated crowd, live music, over-the-top parties and of course, amazing cocktails straight out of the glorious Jazz Age.
Group bar mentor Julian Serna, formerly of Australian cocktail bar Eau de Vie, has crafted a menu of awesome tipples that marry old and new techniques and recipes; think classics with an interesting edge. These concoctions are also created rather theatrically, so you’re in for a dexterous bartending show every time someone orders a drink or two (which means all night) at the party. Choose from three different themes of cocktails: Light & Fruity, Rich & Full-flavoured, and Complex & Stiff, or order one of the Group Serves for your whole table to kick the night off! Our favourite concoctions from the bar are Contraband, Babe Ruth, B.B King, Playing with Fire, and Salty Sea Dog.
If you’re in for the groovy jazzy parties, pop in for The Powder Room’s All That Jazz sessions featuring an outstanding lineup of up-and-comers such as The Steve Mcqueens, Alicia Pan and The Dru Chen Trio. Those craving for a more upbeat night, check into the bar when guest DJs spin their unique fusion of sounds and music. Past DJs that have helmed the decks include Crayon (FR) and Pillowtalk (US). Come November 5th, French Electronic wunderkind Darius (FR) is going to set the dance floor on fire with his distinctive blend of uplifting disco and funk dusted with an underground intricacy.
As if that’s not enough to get you going, The Powder Room also has an amazing happy hour that Mr Gatsby will totally approve. Between 6 to 7pm on weekdays, you get a glass of Champagne on the house on one lovely condition that we absolutely don’t mind: you’ve got to be in heels. No stilettos, no bubbles. Psst: boys may apply!
