Fred Perry relaunches a gig in Singapore like no other, with a secret location, and featuring local bands, DJs, and a special showcase from Friendly Fires this August
From high-brow establishments like The Esplanade to obscure hideouts like Kult Kafé, there’re a couple of reliable, known venues where you can expect to find live music. But just like stumbling upon an exceptional underground band that’s a diamond in the rough, it’s always more rewarding when you discover a gem in the least likely of places. And for years, that’s exactly what British sportswear-slash-streetwear brand, Fred Perry, gave to the scene.

Under the gig series name, Sub-Sonic Live, Fred Perry stealthily launched pop-up concerts in all sorts of dubious locales – an abandoned basketball court, an open-air lawn, even a futsal park hidden beneath a flyover. And aside from grooming local talent – including the indie superstars of today like Pleasantry, Charlie Lim and Weish – these not-so-secret gigs pulled in top-tier global talents too like New York’s Ra Ra Riot. Essentially, if you caught onto the word on the street and found yourselves at these concerts, you were dubbed one of the cool folks.

But don’t be hard on yourself if you missed out; you now have another rare opportunity to redeem yourself. On 4 August, after a three-year hiatus, Fred Perry relaunches the gig series under a new alias, FRED PERRY SUBCULTURELIVE, and it’s hardly a small deal. Headlining the comeback concert is the frontman of indie-rock trailblazers, Friendly Fires’ Jack Savidge, who will be dropping an exclusive DJ set. Local left-field rebels, Poptart, will also take deck duties to spin a set of indie hits, Brit-pop classics and alt-rock anthems. Homegrown outfits, shoegazers Subsonic Eye and “tropical-poppers” Specific Islander – two of our local bands to watch out for this year – will also take centre stage, and they’ll all be accompanied by the trippy, brain-melting projections of visual artist, Empyreal (also one-part of ATTAGIRL!).
So where is this seedy shindig happening? As of yet, we don’t actually know; details are intentionally scant and will only be revealed at a later date via social media. But if you wanna hang at where the hip happenings are and join this subculture, stay tuned as always.
FRED PERRY SUBCULTURELIVE, 4 August, 7pm-late, venue TBC. You can register for free invites now at this website.
