What better way to celebrate National Day than to support (read: buy) Singaporean brands, eat local food, and catch homegrown bands at this weekend market?
Our idea of a perfect weekend looks a little like this: an uninterrupted sleep-in, followed by a fabulous brunch at one of our favourite dining spots in Singapore, and a rummage through a weekend market in search of awesome new things we didn’t know we needed. That’s why we’re chuffed to hear that Wheelock Place is bringing back its OYAY Weekend Market this coming National Day weekend, and it’s all about Singapore. Hooray!
The OYAY SinGalore Weekend Market will feature more than 20 vendors across Levels 1 and 2 of the mall, including a delightful selection of local retailers. Wheelock Place is also going the extra mile to evoke nostalgia with decorative installations of familiar icons such as the Merlion, mobile ice cream cart, and the old-school dragon slide.
For the home
If you’re looking to inject some local flavour into your home, nab one of MitchMatchh’s colourful, modern tingkats for storing leftovers and dried goods while saving precious space on your shelf. Bored with the same white walls? Head to Onlewo’s booth and check out their stunning wallpaper and upholstery inspired by Asian culture and landscapes. For quirky handmade accessories that give you the fuzzies, pop by Ordinary People’s and pick up a cool print, a pair of bedroom slippers or a fluffy pillow.
For your wardrobe
Whoop – jeweller Annamei.F is back by popular demand to add some pizazz to your wrists with a new range of customised bead bracelets made with semi-precious stones. And because there’s no such thing as too many scarves (wear one as a turban, around your neck, or use it to jazz up your bag), you should totally get a Singapore-themed one from Binary Style. There’s also a veritable smorgasbord of squee at thepigbakesclay’s, whose miniature food charms in the form of nonya kuehs, potong ice creams, macarons and rainbow cake ooze with so much cute.
For the peckish
All that shopping and browsing making you hungry and thirsty? Good thing there’s some delicious grub and drinks at the market, like cold-pressed juices from Juice Junkies, sorbet popiscles by Popaganda, gula melaka-coconut, matcha and kopi-chocolate cookies from Spatula & Whisk, and – wait for it – nasi lemak-flavoured teas by tea traders Ette Tea.
For the fans
You’ll want to keep your eyes out for Wheelock Place’s very own tenants: Atlantic Optical, Bangkok Jam, Crumpler, EpiCentre, Outdoor Life, PULSE TCM Clinic, Sakae Sushi and Threadbare & Squirrel will also be peddling their wares with special curated products, deals and treats for this market only. Lucky us!
For your ears
To make the market even more splendid, local duo-bands Ciao Turtles and The Jukuleles will be on stage to perform popular tunes you can sing along to while you splash your cash on local goods. We’re so marking our calendars for this doozy party!
OYAY SinGalore Weekend Market is happening on 6 and 7 August 2016 (Sat and Sun), from 11am–9pm at Wheelock Place, Levels 1 and 2. Visit Wheelock Place’s website for more information.
