The second season of rugby has just begun at the Singapore Sports Hub with two of the biggest international rugby tournaments – Super Rugby 2017 and the HSBC World Rugby Sevens taking place at the Singapore Sports Hub from March to May. In conjunction with the best on-field action, the Singapore Sports Museum is launching a rugby exhibition “Warring Warriors: The Fundamentals of Rugby” which showcases the history and growth of the sport in the country. The exhibition will run from 13 March to 7 May 2017.
At the exhibition, there will be glimpses of our nation’s history with the oval ball, led by stories of school rivalry told through jerseys and rugby memorabilia contributed by Anglo Chinese School (Barker Road), Raffles Institution, St Joseph’s Institution and St Andrew’s School. One of the highlights include a vintage rugby ball from 1983, which tells the story of St Andrew’s emerging as winners of the Singapore Cricket Club Sevens. The exhibition also features a jersey autographed by Shota Horie, captain of the inaugural SUNWOLVES squad. The SUNWOLVES made their debut in the 2016 Super Rugby season and played three exciting games at the National Stadium last year, winning the hearts and minds of many spectators.
A good pit-stop to brush up on the ins and outs of rugby before catching the matches, the exhibition also aims to walk visitors through the actualities of game play, providing them with an in-depth look at the sport’s rules, the history of women’s participation in the sport, and also a current account of rugby in the international, regional, and local eco-systems.
