Morrissey, Scorpions, Daniela Andrade and more grace stages all over Singapore in October, for thrilling shows that will rock your socks off
The high-octane hype from the Music Matters Festival and F1 gigs (how good was Queen?!) might’ve simmered down, but that doesn’t mean October’s gonna be any quieter in live music gigs! From electronic wizardries in the ArtScience Museum to flea market pop-up shows, and appearances from indie icons and classic rock gods – this coming month is gonna bring out the mosher in you.
Daniela Andrade: 17 October at Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre
With over a million subscribers, Daniela Andrade is nothing short of a YouTube superstar. Her gentle, feathery vocals have helped her win hearts through covers of Radiohead, Beyoncé, and even Nirvana. And aside from hearing her heart-wrenching renditions of timeless classics, you’ll also catch her original material that shook the industry just a couple of months ago.
The Gathering with Daniela Andrade, 17 October, Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre, Hall 606, 1 Raffles Boulevard, Singapore 039593. Tickets available here.
Stärker Music Carnival: 1 October at Zhongshan Park
Kicking off the month is this debut concept by Stärker Music (yup, this music-boosting initiative is backed by Stärker Beer itself). So grab a couple of pints, chill out on the grass, and get groovy to a myriad of top local acts. Performers include jazz and soul maverick Charlie Lim, dancey synth-pop outfit Disco Hue, pop-pushing singer-songwriter LEW, and more. Cheers to homegrown talent!
Stärker Music Carnival, 1 October, Zhongshan Park, 1 Jalan Rajah, Singapore 329133. Tickets available here.
Dan Deacon: 6 October at ArtScience Museum
Part of the ArtScience Museum’s new monthly event series, ArtScience Late, this Baltimore producer swings by with his schizophrenic, shape-shifting repertoire. His experimental songs vary between hyperactive chiptune and otherworldly freak folk, and also glitchy renderings of synth-pop. Whatever Dan Deacon chooses to pull outta his bag of tricks come show day (and trust us when we say he has a colourful live show), you’d best keep an open mind for it!
Change Your Life (You Can Do It!) with Dan Deacon, 6 October, ArtScience Museum, 6 Bayfront Avenue, Singapore 018974. Free admission.
Spectrum Music Festival 2016: 8 October at University Cultural Centre
Electronic music is the future, so where are all the budding, local synthy talents of tomorrow? Run by the Electronic Music Lab of National University of Singapore – a collective that fosters the growth of electronic scene – this two-stage festival will feature both fledgling button-pushers and knob-turners, as well as names that have already made (synth)waves through the scene. Noteworthy whizzes include Disco Hue, Canvas Conversations, and Mitch Advent.
Spectrum Music Festival 2016, 8 October, University Cultural Centre, 50 Kent Ridge Crescent, Singapore 119279. Tickets available here.
Singapore International Festival of Music: 13-30 October
It’s not just about rock-fests and electronic escapades this month; this series of events is catered to the classically-conscious. The Singapore International Festival of Music (or SIFOM) brings down chamber orchestras, classical ensembles and top conductors from all over the world, taking over venues like the Arts House and Victoria Concert Hall for showcases that would’ve made Tchaikovsky squeal.
Singapore International Festival of Music, 13-30 October, visit this website for more details on venues and full performances.
MAAD Sounds: 14 October at Red Dot Design Museum
Why is MAAD Pyjamas one of the hippest flea markets and bazaars in town? Not only is it housed in one of our favourite buildings in Singapore, but it also seasonally plays host to this music series featuring local acts who push the envelope. Nothing’s off the table here; you can expect everything from indie-rock and folk, to new-age electronica and even some smooth jazz. This ain’t your average shopping soundtrack!
MAAD Sounds!, 14 October, 5pm, Red Dot Design Museum, 28 Maxwell Road, Singapore 069120. No cover charge.
Morrissey: 15 October at Marina Barrage
If you’re a loud and proud hipster, then this is one name that won’t fly over your head. Revered as the ex-frontman of ’80s jangle-pop game-changers, The Smiths, Morrissey has since cemented himself as a flamboyant and accomplished solo artiste. With his oozing charisma, bendy vocals and knack for spewing polarising opinions, there are few showmen in the world who can compete with this British rockstar.
Morrissey Live in Singapore, 15 October, Marina Barrage, 8 Marina Gardens Drive, Singapore 018951. Tickets available here.
Scorpions: 21 October at Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre
Crank it up to 11, and go back in time with these classic rock phenoms. Now on their 50th (!!) anniversary tour, Scorpions still have what it takes to rock you like a hurricane, so you bet you’ll be head-banging along to their wailing guitar solos and sky-rocketing vocals. These old-timers still sting!
Scorpions 50th Anniversary Tour, 21 October, Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre, Hall 606, 1 Raffles Boulevard, Singapore 039593. Tickets available here.
A1: 22 October at The Star Theatre
You betcha: it’s A1, the one and the same! Back when pop was dominated by easy-on-the-eyes boybands with mushy ballads and feel-good anthems, A1 were one of the prime players who’d make fangirls teary-eyed. So if you’re still sentimental about hits like “Like A Rose” and “Same Old Brand New You”, this comeback gig will take you way back.
A1 Greatest Hits Tour, 22 October, The Star Theatre, The Star Performing Arts Centre, 1 Vista Exchange Green, Singapore 138617, p. 6636 0055. Tickets available here.
The KVB: 25 October at Headquarters by The Council
Hailing from UK but based outta Berlin, this non-conformist duo is one act to check out if you like your tunes sullen and shadowy. They combine the eerie synths of dark-wave with the hypnotic haziness of shoegaze, with live vocals that tease and tingle through the chaos. Taking place at Headquarters by The Council, this will be the first time the club is used as a live music venue.
Songs For Children Presents The KVB, 25 October, Headquarters by The Council, Lvl 2, 66 Boat Quay, Singapore 049854. Tickets available here.
