How much do you really know about your skin? We got the Honeycombers team together and discovered that they didn't know a whole lot! So, listen up as we set the record straight with 5 myth-busting skincare facts
When it comes to the tricky business of beauty, how much do we really know about skincare in Singapore? We’re often being told that it’s important, but where should we focus our attention? What actually causes ageing? Can we really turn back the clock – and, if so, when should we start? So many questions – but not enough clear answers. There’s where we come in: tired of the myths, misconceptions, and half-truths floating about, we decided to don our myth-busting hats (not to be confused with our ghost-busting attire) to set the record straight once and for all.
After rounding up the Honeycombers team, we quizzed them about common beauty misconceptions. By sharing ‘myths and truths’, we were able to discover what our team (made up of fairly normal individuals) did and didn’t know about skincare – to determine where they needed the most help.
With the skin experts at Shiseido on speed dial (they have decades of specialised research on their side!), we were then able to create the below myth-busting guide, to reveal what is and isn’t true when it comes to skincare. Read on and learn…
Myth #1: The skin under your eyes is as thick as the rest of your face
Out of the 20 Honeycombers team members we quizzed, 16 of them believed this to be true. Sorry to break it to you, folks, but that is false. The truth? The skin under our eyes is only 0.6mm thick – that’s as thin as an egg membrane! – making it the most vulnerable area of your face and the first to show signs of ageing. This is why you’re always being told to remove your eye make-up gently!
Myth #2: On average, you blink 10,000 times a day
Woah, 10,000 times sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? But in reality, that’s only half the actual amount! That’s right: your eyes are constantly in motion, whether it’s due to blinking 20,000 times a day, reading, watching TV, laughing or crying. That’s why eyestrain is on the rise by more than 70 per cent, with symptoms like redness, discomfort, and double vision all taking a massive toll on the skin around your eyes. With so much activity around the eyes, it’s no wonder that they show signs of tiredness through redness and bags – we need to look after those peepers! You’re counting your blinks right now aren’t you? It might take a while…
Myth #3: You should start using eye cream only after turning 40
Nearly everyone we polled agreed that eye cream is only necessary between 30-40. Again, this is so false.
Most dermatologists and skin experts recommend incorporating eye cream into your skincare routine as early as in your twenties. Shiseido’s experts tell us that most women begin to show signs of ageing at just 25 years old. This is because the skin around our eyes is so delicate; hence it will be the first to show any signs of ageing like dark circles, wrinkles, and (gasp!) crow’s feet.
Myth #4: Your skin isn’t capable of fighting against ageing on its own
Not many of us knew the correct answer to this – does the body simply start to break down and give up, or does it actually try to fight off signs of ageing?
Luckily for us – it does try to anti-age! Like your body’s immune system that protects you against illness, your skin also comes equipped with its own set of superhero qualities to fight ageing. How does it do it? With the help of Langerhans cells in your epidermal skin layer, which play a crucial role in protecting your skin against threats like stress, ageing, and the harsh environment. However, internal and external elements like stress, dryness, ageing and UV rays can cause the decline of your Langerhans cells.
This is why, like the rest of our body, our skin can always use an extra helping hand. And that’s where Shiseido’s Ultimune Eye Power Infusing Eye Concentrate comes in: on top of addressing major skin concerns like wrinkles and dark circles, this innovative eye serum also boosts your skin’s defence and immunity system against damaging effects in the long run. Hurrah to that!
Myth #5: Beauty products with natural ingredients are less effective
Talk about a popular misconception! It’s true that some people prefer to buy products with natural ingredients (because it’s friendlier to the environment and feels more organic), but our poll actually revealed that these folks didn’t know whether they were more effective when it comes to anti-ageing. In fact, the results of our quiz stated that the majority felt that natural products would be less effective.
But great news for those who do prefer to buy natural products, because they ARE very powerful. Shiseido have proven this to be true with their award winning Ultimune skincare range. The exciting anti-ageing serum uses a perfect blend of natural botanicals and revolutionary science, and it’s incredibly effective indeed.
So what’s the secret? A specially formulated botanical cocktail of Ectoine (a compound derived from a microorganism with very strong immunity), White Birch Extract (a moisture-infusing ingredient extracted from a tree), Gingko Biloba Leaf, perilla, and thyme. All super ingredients that help your skin in the battle against ageing.
Over 200 women tried out the new Ultimune Eye Power Infusing Eye Concentrate and the results speak for themselves: In one week, 85 per cent experienced smoother skin around the eyes and in four week, 82 per cent reported that their skin immunity was improved with their wrinkles and fine lines becoming less visible.
