Baker and Cook
The brainchild of New Zealand baker extraordinaire Dean Brettschneider, Baker & Cook is a wildly popular bakery, offering a range of homemade breads and baked goods. We love the German Vollkorn (full of wholegrains, it’s a top choice for the health-savvy) and the Sourdough loaf, which is light and airy with a crusty crunch.

Carpenter and Cook
Although they’ve only been around a short while, Carpenter and Cook has made a splash with their super cool vintage store meets cosy café in a quiet corner of Upper Bukit Timah. Offering up a full range of sweet and savoury treats, their breads are made fresh onsite daily. Dessert lovers will be especially smitten with the selection of fresh tarts. The hardest part will be making a choice!

The Bread Project
Dubbed by many as the best bakery in the East (some say the whole island!), The Bread Project serves up a stellar menu of baguettes, ciabattas, and rye breads, with pain au cereal (literally a cereal explosion) for the health conscious amongst us. The scrumptious almond croissants are a definite must try.

Tiong Bahru Bakery
We’re big fans of Tiong Bahru Bakery and not just for the coffee. Apparently the word is out because you’ll be struggling to get a table here on weekends – best to order a takeaway cappuccino and sample your croissants, brownies, or brioche from home. Just don’t forget to take home a baguette (or any of their artisan breads in fact) – they don’t disappoint.
Tiong Bahru Bakery, #01-70, 56 Eng Hoon Street, Tiong Bahru Estate, Singapore 160056, p. 6220 3430. Open Sun-Thurs 8am-8pm & Fri-Sat 8am-10pm
Dolcetto by Basilico
Pick up the perfect Italian pastry at the new pasticceria, Dolcetto by Basilico, where freshly baked Italian breads, artisan pastries, and paninis all come out to play. We hear the fig cake is a winner.

Another contender for title of best French inspired bakery in Singapore, Paul Bakery, serves up all the classics (yep, that’s croissants, brioche, and the like), as well as a full range of artisan breads. Our tip? Best to grab a takeaway loaf: the queues for the restaurant are long and the service staff can be a bit hit and miss.

The name says it all. Freshly Baked is the brainchild of Audrey Tan, owner and Head Baker, who creates some of the lightest and tastiest artisan breads on the island. We love the Walnut Raisin Loaf; it’s bursting with fruity goodness, whilst chocoholics will be smitten with the chocolate loaf (no one said we had to be well-behaved all the time!). Tanglin locals can drop by Nassim Hill – they also stock Tan’s signature breads.
Freshly Baked, 57 Killiney Road, Singapore 239520, p. 6735 3298. Open Mon-Fri 8am-8pm, Sat 8am-6pm & Sun 8am-230pm.
