Getting your first pet
Finally giving in to your child’s pleas for a pet? Or perhaps you’re feeling a little lonely but not quite ready for the major commitment that comes with a dog or cat? Here’s your guide to finding the perfect pet.
Do your homework
Don’t go out on a limb and buy the first pet you see. You’ve got to do your research when it comes to deciding what type of pet is best for your family. Start small with a fish or a turtle to monitor your child’s commitment; all animals, no matter how big or small, need attention.
Playing with your pet is the fun part, but there are downsides that come with the job and someone’s got to do the dirty work! They don’t come cheap either; there’s the vet bill for sicknesses, vitamins and shots, and of course for food and paraphernalia like toys and cages.
Have you given allergies a thought? It’s not just cats and dogs that cause allergies, rabbits can too!
Whether you go for a furry, scaly, or feathery friend, there are plenty of pet shops around that sell small pets.
At Jalan Barito Pet Market, stalls and vendors line the street selling an extensive range of animals. There are rabbits, hamsters, and chickens through to more exotic species like snakes and lizards. You’ll hear birds of all sorts chirping from budgies, pigeons, to parrots as you stroll along the street. Not only is it a one-stop shop for pets but you’ll also find everything else that goes with bringing home a new pet. Whatever you need, they’ve got. This is still a great street to visit, even if you’re not in the market for buying a pet.

Bring home a turtle, rabbit, hamster or even a mouse from the Ragunan Zoo street market. Also on offer are cages and food to make your pet feel more at home.

If you want to ease into having a pet and prefer to start off with a low maintenance pet then it doesn’t get any easier than a fish! You’ll find a fish vendor most days on the corner of Jalan Kemang Dalam XI. Whatever tickles your fancy, this street seller has them all. Try out your bargaining skills.

You might come across some endangered species for sale at these stops and be a little tempted to purchase one, however, do steer clear from buying these animals as they are protected.
Once the new member of the family is home, it’s important to write down rules of responsibilities for each family member. Pop it on the fridge for everyone to see so there are no excuses!
At the end of the day, it’s important that parents oversee the care of their family pet; children will no doubt forget to feed their pets, give clean water, or clean cages.
