Looking to explore another side of Jakarta? Here are some family-friendly spots to enjoy the Big Durian al fresco.
Believe it or not, Jakarta isn’t just about the concrete jungle. While we do love living it up with our five-star hotel brunches, sometimes you can’t beat an afternoon lounging around with a great book in the park. Take the whole family out and spend the weekend outside for a change as we recommend our top outdoor spaces in Jakarta.
Menteng’s Taman Suropati is one of the few clean and green parks located in the heart of Jakarta. On Car Free Sundays, the leafy park comes alive with street vendors hawking ice cold drinks and traditional snacks. Bring your yoga mat along to practice your downward dog for free, courtesy of Komunitas Yoga Gembira.
Taman Suropati, Jl. Taman Suropati RT.05 / RW.05, Menteng, Central Jakarta.
Bet you didn’t realise that nature walks exist in Jakarta! Next time you’re in Pantai Indah Kapuk in search of the latest eats, work up an appetite by talking a stroll through the Mangrove Forest. Drive past the beautiful Buddhist temple to find the tucked away entrance of to this national park (don’t use Waze to do this, trust us, we got lost on our way over). Once there, you’ll almost forget that you’re still in the capital as you walk through the forest. Bring some cash, as yo can rent a canoe for IDR 50,000 and float around while the sun is still up – just make sure you have some bug repellant on you!
Wisata Alam Mangrove Angke, Jl. Garden House, Penjaringan, North Jakarta.
Scientia Square Park (BSD)
If you’re looking for a quick escape from the city without having to drive off too far, just head to the outskirts of Jakarta to Scientia Square Park. The outdoor park is the first of it’s kind, with loads of recreational activities the whole family is sure to love. The giant open space has tracks for jogging and riding your bike, a futsal field, skateboard park, archery, koi farm, paddy field, and butterfly park, just to name a few. Pack your sunnies, slather on the sunblock, and let the good times roll.
Scientia Square Park, Jl. Scientia Boulevard, Gading Serpong, Tangerang.
Junior adventurers and adult animal lovers will love spending the day at Ragunan Zoo. There are all sorts of animals to learn about, especially since the urban zoo boasts a top-notch primate centre starring our national treasures, the orang utans. On the weekends, fitness fiends can also sweat it out in a little outdoor bootcamp, or if you prefer, bike around the park.
Ragunan Zoo, Jl. Harsono RM, No. 1 Ragunan, South Jakarta.
Tribeca Park gets top score in our book just for being one of the only pet-friendly mall spaces in the city. This urban oasis is actually the free for all outdoor area just perched outside Central Park Mall. After a spot of shopping, kick back and relax on the Tribeca Park lawn, where on any given day you can watch fellow visitors zoom by on Segways, partake in group fitness classes, and if you’re lucky, stuff yourself silly at one of many food festivals where you and the family can picnic on the lawn.
Tribeca Park at Central Park Mall, Jl. Letjen. S. Parman Kav. 28, West Jakarta.
