In this edition of Hot New Tables: KHUNG, One Eyed Jack, Ecology, Birdman and Pippo
Looking for new restaurants to check out in Jakarta this August? From a contemporary Asian bar and restaurant, two modern Japanese izakayas, a family-friendly bistro and Italian restaurant, here are this month’s pick of the crop.
KHUNG Bar and Restaurant
Love Asian food but want to dine some place where you can pair your pao with a bespoke cocktail? Hit up the newly opened KHUNG, a restaurant serving contemporary Asian fare with dishes and drinks that will please your palettes. Must-tries for grub include their Laughing Pao, Duck Tacos, and Rose Tiramisu. Because KHUNG is ran by nightlife empire ALLIN of The Pallas and Fable, of course, artfully presented cocktails are a standout – there’s even a Matcha Leaf Cocktail complete with fresh milk and vanilla ice cream.

One Eyed Jack
Jakarta is definitely not lacking for awesome Japanese restaurants, but there is always room for one more. The latest arrival is One Eyed Jack, the modern Japanese izakaya brainchild of a Nobu veteran chef, that also first opened its kitchens in Bali in 2016. Luckily, they’ve decided to come over to the Big Durian to serve up tasty Japanese izakaya sharing plates like Spicy Tuna Bites, Hamachi Jalapeno Sashimi Plate, Miso Black Cod, Rock Shrimp Tempura, and Tsukune Yakitori, perfect for washing down with an ice-cold sake.

Senayan City’s newest opening is a charming Italian eatery called Pippo, Biko Group’s (founders of Beer Garden, Lola and Pao Pao) first venture into Western cuisine and a home-run. Their kitchen serves an array of comfort dishes like pizza, Fiorentina steak and pastas – their Raviolini in Brodo is just what you want on a rainy day, whereas we can’t recommend their Tagliolini Al Limone enough – our favourite dish is a surprising treat to the tastebuds, creamy, yet refreshing, and with a proper kick of chili at the end.

Exhausted all your Kemang go-tos and looking for a new place to grab a bite in this family-friendly neighbourhood? Situated in the same compound as Aksara, Ecology is a casual bistro that serves easy comfort food, cocktails and coffee for any time of day. With high ceilings, large windows that bring in lots of natural light, Ecology has relaxed vibes that are perfect for a quiet Sunday afternoon.

If you’re looking to kick it at SCBD’s latest, head to Birdman, a modern Japanese gastropub with minimalist touches. Arrive hungry as diners are flush with options, with sharing plates that range from poke to gyutan. Other must-tries include their chicken katsu curry and okonomiyaki, best enjoyed with a side of Japanese beer, of course. Pssttt…if you’re dining there for a business lunch, you even get 15% off your meal when you’re a party of 4 or more.
