Museum MACAN is a 43,000 square foot nirvana for art-lovers looking to catch mind-blowing artworks from the likes of Raden Saleh, Affandi, Jeff Koons, and many other most celebrated artists across the globe.
Jakarta is home to many aesthetes who can never get enough of interesting art spaces and museums to explore (us included of course!). That’s why we were thrilled to hear that the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts in Nusantara – aka Museum MACAN – is finally set to open later this year!
After a few setbacks, Museum MACAN is scheduled to officially open on 7 November 2017. Their exciting first line-up of artworks include a range local and International artists such as Raden Saleh, S. Sudjojono, FX Harsono, Arahmaini, Robert Rauschenberg, Yayoi Kusama, Jean-Michel Basquiat. The first 90 works that will be showcased at its inaugural exhibition are the personal collections of the museum founder Haryanto Adikoesoemo.
What is it like?
Just in case you’ve been living underneath a rock, Museum MACAN will be Indonesia’s first modern and contemporary museum of art with an international caliber. The museum is dedicated to advancing Indonesian artworks to a global stage while bringing in internationally celebrated pieces to the country (lucky us!). Located in West Jakarta, Museum MACAN will comprise of a 2,000 square meter space that includes exhibition galleries, an indoor sculpture garden, an audio visual room, and a multi-purpose room that can be used to host dynamic exhibitions, commission new artworks, and other art-related public events.
We honestly can’t wait until it opens! And if you feel the same, fret not – MACAN First Site is a program that kicked off in March, allowing visitors to a sneak peek experience through a series of free on-site events. Its indoor sculpture garden is also open for you to preview some of its mind-blowing collections.
