Listed up foodies, the latest #foodporn is black. All over the city, charcoal-laden food is hitting our burgers, drinks, and desserts.
From burgers to frozen yogurt, and bread to detox juices, black charcoal is definitely having a moment. Don’t let its inky appearance deter you – activated charcoal infused foods are chockfull of potential health benefits that are detoxifying and purifying. But don’t just take our word for it, find out for yourself. Here are the restaurants in Jakarta crossing over to the dark side.
Black Magic at Urban Remedy
The first time we heard about Urban Remedy’s Black Magic drink, we were admittedly more than a bit hesitant to give it a try. A charcoal infused beverage? Errmmm… But first impressions can be deceiving, as we were happily surprised to find that it tastes just like lemonade. Indeed, this refreshing concoction includes a blend of lemon, filtered water, rosemary and activated charcoal that effectively flushes away the toxins from your body (and works as an excellent hangover cure too).

Charcoal Beef Obao at Francis Artisan Bakery
On a health-kick, but can’t get your carb cravings out of your system? We feel you. Francis Artisan Bakery is famous for their signature obaos, an egg-free, Japanese-French fusion bread that uses only natural fermented fruit yeast, which produces soft and chewy textures. The Charcoal Beef Obao is baked with charcoal infused dough and filled with tender beef brisket, pesto, dijon mustard and cheddar cheese.

Black Sakura Frozen Yogurt at Sour Sally
Our favourite froyo joint is home to the Black Sakura Frozen Yogurt, the Insta-famous ice cold treat blackened by a detoxifying activated charcoal. High in antioxidants and rich in probiotics, the froyo also has a Sakura blossom infusion that gives the dish its sweet, flowery scent. Thanks to all its detoxifying benefits, we feel less guilty about topping it off with cookie dough and chocolate sauce! (Sshh…)

Angus Burger at Wyl’s Kitchen
Who knew that such a pretty bistro would churn out this dark as night, goth-like burger. Wyl’s Kitchen’s famous Angus Burger is one hearty dish that is stacked high with a juicy beef patty, lettuce and gooey cheese sandwiched between two soft buns that are deeply pigmented with black charcoal and served with crispy fries on the side. We’re guessing this one doesn’t technically have health benefits, but hey, we highly approve.

Kuro Japadog at Cafe Shirokuma
Cafe Shirokuma may be best known for their brightly coloured kawaii desserts, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a little of the dark side in them. Their jet-black Kuro Japadog features a bamboo charcoal hotdog bun topped with a deep-fried frankfurter, seaweed, and special mayo. If your heart is set on dessert, finish off with their bamboo charcoal soft cream parfait.

Black Cheesecake Soft Serve Ice Cream at BC’s Cone
BC’s Cone in PIK is famous for their strikingly black soft serve cheesecake ice cream that is served in a delicious red velvet waffle cone, or atop a warm red velvet doughnut. You may make a mess, but it will be oh so worth it.
