We can't wait to catch a load of films at this year's Hong Kong Lesbian Gay Film Festival
From Hong Kong movies to trashy TV shows and our monthly What We’re Watching column, there’s no denying that we here at Honeycombers are huge screen addicts. And that’s why we’re so excited for Hong Kong Lesbian Gay Film Festival (HKLGFF) 2018, an event that celebrates queer culture, actors and directors from around the globe. Tickets for this event always sell out super fast, so here’s what to look out for this year.
Hong Kong Lesbian Gay Film Festival (HKLGFF) 2018
Opening this year’s festival, Sorry Angel is a French film set in 1993 that tells the tale of love between a film student and an HIV-positive writer. Directed by Christophe Honoré, this semi-autobiographical work explores love, loss and the idea of romance, and we can’t wait to catch it on the big screen.
Hong Kong Lesbian Gay Film Festival (HKLGFF) 2018 includes a number of Asian feature films, including Those Long Haired Nights (The Philippines), a movie that tells the tale of three transgender friends in Manila and Until Rainbow Dawn (Japan) that explores the relationship between a young deaf couple. There will also be a selection of different short films from around the world, including girl shorts, queer shorts, boy shorts, and even a whole series dedicated to French shorts!
Ahead of the Gay Games 2022, which will be held in Hong Kong, two sport-related films have also been selected for the festival. Man Made is a documentary that follows a group of trans bodybuilders, while Mario is a romantic drama that tackles the issues around homophobia in the football industry.
The closing film for this year’s festival is the Taiwanese movie Bao Bao. An official selection at OUTFEST Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival, that tells the story of a lesbian Taiwanese couple who want to start a family and also examines themes of acceptance and marriage equality.
Mamma Mia Singalong
One of the highlights of this year’s festival will undoubtedly be the singalong screening of Mamma Mia. Join the warm-up session at Petticoat Lane beforehand, then head on over to the cinema where you can belt out classic Abba tunes as you watch the movie, with no one telling you off. Hosted my drag diva Madame Mincemeat, you haven’t lived till you’ve attended a singalong sesh, so get in quick for these tickets!
Don’t miss the parties!
And on top of all the wonderful films on offer, there will also be some rad parties to attend during the HKLGFF 2018. The opening party will be held at Ophelia on 8 September, while the closing dance party will take place at Yojimbo on 22 September with DJ Hayden and Taki on the decks.
