Lesser-known Bali Destinations
A break from Bali?
Hard to believe, but sometimes you just need an antidote to the hustle and bustle of Seminyak or Ubud. Our top three weekend getaways? Enjoying the crisp mountain air in Bedugul, watching dolphins frolic at sunrise at Lovina, and relaxing at Candidasa.
You’ll come back refreshed and ready for action.
If the idea of picking strawberries straight from the patch or paddling a boat on a lake sounds like a pleasant way to spend a weekend then Bedugul, a gorgeous mountain village a couple of hours out of town, is our prescription for you.
Savour the serenity and wide open spaces in the Botanical Garden while you check out its famous orchid collection. What keeps bringing us back to Bedugul – apart from the luscious red strawberries – is the Bali Treetop Adventure Park, an obstacle circuit set high up in the trees.
Me Tarzan, you Jane. Just don’t look down.
Bali Treetop Adventure Park, Jalan Kebun Raya Eka Karya Bali Candikuning Angseri Baturiti Tabanan Bali, Indonesia. p. +62 361 8520680. Open daily 8.30am-6pm.
Lovina, on Bali’s north coast, is a quiet, sleepy beach village so you’ll have no trouble setting your alarm clock and getting up at sunrise to watch the dolphins catch their morning feed. Spend the day snorkelling and diving, eating grilled fish caught fresh that morning, and taking an energising dip at the Banjar Hot Springs.
Some say the east coast of Bali is the ‘real Bali’ and we love the vibe at Candidasa. Spend your days in the water, snorkeling and scuba diving, or if you’re feeling really energetic there are plenty of great places for hiking. Visit the traditional Tenganan Village to check out their amazing ikat weaving or simply grab a book and relax under an umbrella on a white sandy beach.
