Shop in the jungle, bamboo designed home of sustainable luxury, visiting one of the world’s most famous, Bali-born jewellery brands that is proudly and uniquely inspired by the time-honoured traditions of Bali's past
Not to name names, but if Cara D is the biggest fan of this Bali jewellery brand, then we want to go there! Literally – visit it all. Because it’s not every day that purchasing an exquisite, hand-crafted, silver or gold bangle, necklace or ring from the Bamboo Collection of arguably Bali’s most well-known, international jewellery company comes with a complimentary planting of bamboo tree, or three… all in your honour. Not to mention an organic lunch, and personal workshop tour…
This is just one part of John Hardy’s inspiring story that sets the Bali company apart from most luxury brands today. And now, in a Store Snoop story with a difference, venture to where it all began: you can go direct to the home of the brand right here in Bali, personally watching the pieces being made by hand in their Ubud workshop, enjoying a beautiful lunch hosted by the design team and then shop away at their bamboo, open-air showroom in the jungle.
Why visit? Well, from their Balinese, artisan craftsmanship, their commitment to employing local artisans in hand-making each piece whilst respecting their time-honoured traditions – not to mention their sustainable bamboo program, or even shopping under the most giant bamboo sails you may ever see – buying a piece of John Hardy in Bali isn’t a typical retail exchange.
The brand was created in the seventies when Canadian artist John Hardy (now pioneering his sustainable love of bamboo design with the Green Village and Green School) and his wife Cynthia discovered the inspiring tradition of artistry among the Balinese, and their skill for hand-crafting jewellery that dated back to the goldsmiths of the ancient Balinese courts.
Embracing the challenges of living and working in the jungle from the early days, the brand strives to protect the spirit of Bali by sourcing reclaimed metals and runs a global initiative to plant sustainable bamboo on a global scale, through their “Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo” program – ensuring seedlings are planted as part of every purchase from the Bamboo collection. They’ve planted more than 1 million seedlings to date.
But beyond John Hardy’s inspiring standards, workplace, environmental consciousness and commitment in protecting Bali’s hand-craftmanship skills, they design just beautiful pieces of jewellery. Stunning. With such a lovely legacy.
They may now be internationally famous with boutiques and fans from Rodeo Drive to Russia. But only in Bali can you explore the world of John Hardy and visit where every piece of jewellery is conceived, designed and produced in their design center, workshop and showroom.
The John Hardy Ubud Workshop & Showroom Tour is an inspiring experience: visit the open-air design center and workshop and see the master artisans at their craft; learn about Bali’s renowned creative traditions; explore the property’s organic farm and kitchen; savour a traditional Balinese lunch alongside the artisans and designers, served at a long table under the shade of Banyan trees; view current and vintage collections, and finish with a shop at the Kapal Bambu Boutique.
And don’t forget you’ll also be doing good by planting some bamboo trees, if you choose any treasures from the Bamboo Collection!
